We are honored to be a part of the OC Mutual Aid Network, which is a collective of affinity groups working together to provide our people with the essential resources they need to address systemic harm in our communities. We center radical BIPOC political agendas and struggles through direct action, advocacy, mobilization, and education. As our grassroots work expands, we believe this network will be essential to providing community run cooperatives within North Orange County outside of systems of capitalism and white supremacy. Demands to UCI:
- A year-round monthly Cost of Living Adjustment of $1,084 for every graduate student at UC Irvine, regardless of graduate program, department, year in program, residence, visa category, documentation, or funding and employment status, and without raising tuition or campus fees.
- Full transparency on the criteria through which UCI determines rent rates, and an end to the artificial inflation of housing prices to match market rates rather than student financial needs. A demand for a Cost of Living Adjustment is also a call for the University of California to give equal pay for equal work.
- Graduate students who are legal guardians of dependent children or responsible for the care of dependent adults have financial needs that well exceed that of a $1084 per month adjustment. We demand that the university accommodate the needs of numerous graduate students at UC[I] who care for such dependents.
- The UC reinstate and reappoint all student-workers– whether terminated or barred from being considered for a TAship – at UC Santa Cruz and any future potential graduate student firings in the UC system related to the cola4all movement. We demand that the UC refrain from taking preemptive and retaliatory measures, whether implicit or explicit, against agitating or striking graduate student workers who are underpaid, rent-burdened, and economically precarious, demanding for their basic rights in order to continue serve their roles as researchers, educators and students.
- In solidarity with the UCI Black Student Union & United Students Against Sweatshops, we demand the abolition of the UC Irvine police department, starting with the immediate firing of officer Trish Harding for her assault of a Black UCI alumna on February 20, 2020. Police presence at UC Irvine is a legacy of the physical and psychological anti-Black violence. Concrete steps toward abolition include but are not limited to: demilitarization/disarmament and not increasing funds currently allocated to UCIPD.
- Undergraduate and graduate students be allowed to stay in their on-campus housing for the remainder of the Spring and Summer quarters
- Full suspension of rent payments from students and a refund of all April rent payments already paid
- A full refund of Spring quarter tuition and campus fees
- Waive course prerequisite requirements, grant necessary credits to those scheduled to graduate in Spring quarter, and cancel or render optional spring classes
- Fully paid administrative leave for all graduate students and UC workers through Spring and Summer quarters, including those who have already been terminated or dismissed
- Access to physical and mental health resources to all students, campus workers, and staff that is free of charge and accessible online
- A one year extension of time to degree, fully funded, to be extended to all matriculated PhD students
- No enforcement of parking fees
- Guaranteed sick pay for all workers
